I am a Broadcast Journalism student at the Philip Merill College of Journalism. I believe that society is leading the development of new technology, rather than technology now leading our society. Many members of our society are focused on "the next best thing," pushing digital companies to combine style, convenience, and ingenuity to create something new. When a new piece of technology comes out, we are often at first fascinated and intrigued by the new capabilities it has to offer, but then start thinking, "this could be fixed," "this should have that," and of course, "what's next?" Although the release of technologies has catered our interests towards different mediums and ways of doing things, such as the decline of print newspapers in the shadow of online and television news, we are the ones pushing for change. Just think of the continuous buzz around the next new iPhone that we hear every year or so. Not only is the consumer pushing for these new changes to technologies to make their lives easier and have the pride of obtaining "the latest," the competition between technology companies is also leading this development as well. We often see commercials comparing certain technologies from one company to another to show different capabilities in one that the other doesn't have. When the consumer responds to this in a positive way, it continues the endless cycle of supply and demand that constantly leads to the development of new, innovative technology.
